A Star to Share: Local Community Lights Up Lakeside for Matariki

Lakeside2 small

Over Matariki weekend, the new Lakeside Playground became home to a special community installation celebrating reflection, creativity, and connection.

Titled “A Star to Share,” the temporary artwork installation brought together hundreds of wooden stars decorated by members of the Te Kauwhata community. Inspired by the themes of Matariki - remembrance, celebration, and looking ahead - each star featured a personalised message sharing memories, gratitude, and hopes for the future.

Community members of all ages took part, painting stars and adding thoughtful reflections. Some honoured loved ones who have passed or people who have made a difference in their lives, while others celebrated milestones from the past year, from new friendships to personal achievements. Many looked to the future, expressing hopes to learn, grow, and embrace new opportunities.

Displayed throughout the Matariki-themed playground, the stars transformed the space into a colourful constellation of stories and aspirations. While the installation was temporary, it created a meaningful opportunity for the community to connect with the values at the heart of Matariki.

The installation showcased the power of community and storytelling, creating a space where people could share what matters most to them. Through hundreds of individual stars, A Star to Share captured the collective spirit of Lakeside and the values that make Matariki such a meaningful time of year.
